Which famous Viking are you?

Choose an answer to each of the questions below, make sure to make a note of which letter you choose for each question, so you can find out which Viking you're most like at the end.

What role would you like to have in Viking society?

A. Explorer - you love sailing on the seven seas to discover places nobody has seen before.

B. Killer - You're not happy unless you're swinging your weapons at somebody - but you're pretty sure they started it.

C. Raider - you desire riches and love to attack wealthy settlements, steal all their valuables and return home to riotous applause from your family and friends.

D. Invader - you've had enough of your old home and want to find fame and fortune in a new exciting place, ideally England - and you'll take it by force if you have to.

E. Royalty of course - you were born to rule and will do so with an iron fist.

What would you like to be famous for?

A. Your amazing discoveries - most notably your discovery of America centuries before anybody else from Europe managed it.

B. Your bloodthirsty reputation - you like murder more than the average Viking and have even been banished from an entire country because of it.

C. The many successful raids you've lead - these have made you so legendary that people have written about you in epic stories called the Viking Sagas.

D. Invading and conquering loads of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms - an incredible feat achieved alongside your brothers, as the leader of one of the largest Viking armies ever seen.

E. Your epic role in the final battle between the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons - and your rivalry with a particularly puny and stupid wannabe king who shall remain nameless (it was Harold Godwinson...).

What would you like your Viking name to reflect about you?

A. That you come from a very famous family and have a very powerful father.

B. That you've killed loads of people and liked shedding their blood.

C. That your legs are so hairy you look like you're wearing furry trousers.

D. That you're a bit of a coward - or worse, might even be a floppy meat sack with no bones!

E. That you're a hard and aggressive ruler who likes to solve any problems with the sharp edge of a weapon in battle (and you're definitely a better ruler than that Harold Godwinson fool).

What embarrassing moment from your life would you like people to forget?

A. How your life's biggest achievement was thought to be down to sheer luck. Why do people keep saying you wouldn't have found America if you hadn't been blown off course by that huge storm?

B. How you named your new settlement "Greenland" in an attempt to make more people want to live there, even though the area was mostly rocky and cold - anything but green really.

C. That one fatal occasion where you were thrown into a pit of snakes - do you still get to go to Valhalla if you died battling vipers?

D. How you didn't lend a hand in the attempt to conquer Wessex against King Alfred - maybe if you'd have helped, the battle would have been more successful for the Vikings and Alfred wouldn't have earned himself that showy nickname of "the Great".

E. That time you left your chainmail in the ship and ended up dying when an arrow got shot through your neck - why do people still keep going on about that? That idiot Harold Godwinson died with an arrow in his eye - surely that's more embarrassing?

Where would you like to live?

A. Greenland - a rocky, cold and stark land but its where your father lived and you're proud of it.

B. Iceland - at least for a little while until you get kicked out for killing too many people.

C. Live? In one place? No thanks - you'd much rather travel across Europe and raid everywhere you can.

D. Dublin, Ireland - alongside your best friend, the Danish king of Dublin, Olaf the White.

E. Norway - where you are the king, even though most people there don't like you very much. But they'd probably hate that pile of poop Harold Godwinson more...

Who is your biggest enemy?

A. The harsh sea weather - constantly blowing you off course and causing delays in your expeditions.

B. Your rude neighbour - if he hadn't started a petty feud with you, you wouldn't have had to murder him, leading to your exile from your homeland.

C. King Charles the Bald - he's pretty upset with you after he paid you to leave Paris but you came back and raided it anyway. Oops.

D. King Aella of Northumbria - that pesky murderer chucked your dad into a pit of snakes. You will avenge your father!

E. Harold Godwinson of course - he offered Tostig (your ally and his brother) a peace agreement with a truce, but told you the only reward you'd receive was a grave, the cheeky toerag!

Got your answers? Find out who you are below:

Mostly A's - You're Leif Erikson

Viking sailors on a storm-tossed wooden ship; a man in yellow points ahead while others brace against rough seas and grey sky.
Leif Erikson charting his course to new lands

The son of the famous, bloodythirsty Viking, Erik the Red - but you couldn't be less like your father. You love to travel, discover new lands and try out the local cuisine. You were even the first person from Europe to discover America - 500 years before anybody else. You're honoured to call Greenland your home, just because that's where your dad's from. And so what if your dad made a few mistakes early in his life? You love him and proudly declare that you're his son every time you tell someone your name.

Mostly B's - You're Erik the Red

Black-and-white engraving of an armored warrior with shield and spear, framed by old text and decorative border.
Erik the Red looking ready to head into battle

Famous for having blood red hair - or is it actually that you're famous for spilling red blood everywhere you go? Things started out pretty badly, what with your dad killing lots of people in Norway and being banished to Iceland. Then you followed in his footsteps by killing loads of people in Iceland and being banished from there too. Luckily, you changed your ways when you discovered a new place to settle. Yeah there's a lot of ice, and where there's not ice there's rocks, but, what can you say, it's home. Best not to tell everyone else it's super cold and stark though - better to call it "Greenland" and then everyone will think it's full of trees and grass and will totally want to visit.

Mostly C's - You're Ragnar Lothbrok

Grayscale scene of an armored man lying dead on a snake-strewn floor, while another figure points through a window above.
A pit of snakes is a nasty way to die Ragnar!

An ultra-famous Viking who reached legendary status - you're written about in many stories and Viking sagas through the centuries. You raided more places than anybody can count and made yourself very rich indeed. One of your greatest achievements was your part in the siege of Paris against King Charles the Bald (yes that's bald as in hairless, not bold as in brave, what a way to be remembered!). The way you got Baldy to pay you to leave but then came back to raid Paris anyway showed just how sly you are. But we won't mention your really painful death - King Aella must have really hated you to throw you into a pit of snakes like that. Ouch.

Mostly D's - You're Ivar the Boneless

Medieval illustration of armored soldiers on a crowded boat battling rough seas, spears raised.
Ivar the Boneless and his brothers set sail with a large army to avenge their father.

A truly powerful Viking with a thirst for vengeance. And don't worry, we all know your name is meant to be ironic, because you've actually gained quite the fearsome reputation. The world watched on in awe when you and your brothers lead the Great Heathen Army of Vikings to invade England, conquering Anglo-Saxon kingdom after Anglo-Saxon kingdom. And what a moment when you finally got your hands on King Aella - the nasty piece of work who threw your father, Ragnar Lothbrok into that pit of snakes to die. You still insist that you won't tell anybody what you did with King Aella in the end, but it certainly struck fear into the hearts of everyone who knew of you.

Mostly E's - You're Harald Hardrada

Stained-glass king in red robes and crown, holding a sword, with ornate gold background and Latin banner text.
Harald Hardrada in his royal finery - I bet Harold Godwinson didn't look this good in stained glass.

The ruthless and harsh king of Norway with reputation for ruling with an iron fist. So what if none of your subjects particularly like you? Your reputation as a fearsome leader gave you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - the chance to form an alliance with Tostig in his battle against his brother, Harold Godwinson, the new King of England. Could this be your chance to steal the crown? We won't comment on the bitter rivalry that grew between you and Harold. And how you mistakenly left your chainmail in your own ship at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, causing you to die rather humiliatingly when an arrow was shot through your neck. Eek.
